Sheet masks have never been my cup of tea. They have always been fun to buy, collect, and store in a cute box. However, I almost never reach for them. They’re always sopping wet, cold, and generally awkward to fit on my face. I mean I get that it’s one-size-fits-all but some of them seem fitted for an ogre. I’ve been reading up on regular face mask use, and the feedback has consistently been positive with most reviewers promising tangible results. Color me intrigued!
Sheet masks come in at step 7 in the 10 step Korean skincare routine, followed by eye cream, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Religiously following the 10 step routine will be another future endeavor of mine, but for the sake of this challenge, I only am using my facial cleanser and serum before my sheet masks. I really want to see if the difference in my skin quality is coming solely from the sheet masks. So, let the 7-Day Sheet Mask Challenge begin!
I chose a solid assortment of face masks, varying in ingredients and textures. The 7 sheet masks included: Benton Snail Bee High Content Mask (nourishing), It’s Skin Hyaluronic Sheet Mask (hydrating), Petitfée Gold Hydrogel Mask (renewing), TonyMoly Pureness 100 Green Tea Mask (soothing), TonyMoly Pureness 100 Propolis Mask (anti-inflammatory), Dr. Oracle Dermasys Mineral Soo Mask (balancing), and The Saem Pomegranate Sheet Mask (brightening).
Putting on a sheet mask every day seems like a simple task, but it was so easy to forget. I usually push my nightly skincare routine to the last possible moment. So, it was a pain in the first few days remembering that I had to add on an extra 15 to 20 minutes to my routine to sit stoically with a mask on. This irritation began to morph into intrigue by day 3 when I began to notice conspicuous results. The dryness around my nose and chin was disappearing, my redness was fading, and my faint wrinkles felt plumped up. By the second half of the week, I was actually looking forward to putting my mask on. And, by the 7th day, my skin was absolutely glowing.
What’s important to remember about skincare is that the basis of it stems almost solely from hydration. Hydration is key. When your skin is soaking up moisture, it plumps up, making your fine lines a thing of the past. I have to give sheet masks credit because they’re a clever way of keeping your skin soaked in moisture for a prolonged period of time, while adding in reinforcing ingredients. I like to think of it almost as the difference between drinking water and drinking water packed with minerals and electrolytes. Another unexpected result from this challenge was a decrease in stress (our skin’s worst enemy). Forcing myself to remain inactive for those 15 to 20 minutes really helped me unwind and relax at the end of each day. I even found myself slipping into a nice, meditative state by the end of the week. Overall, this is a super fun experiment to try out yourself at home. You’ll be surprised and pleased with the resulting dewy, glowy, and plumped skin!!
