The Review Is In: Pyunkang Yul Cleansing Foam

Korean skincare is very adamant about the concept of “less is more” in terms of ingredients in their products. With so many brands on the market competing for the title of “most natural” or “purest,” it’s entertaining and surprising to see how far some have gone to totally eradicate expendable ingredients. We all remember the days of the paragraph long ingredient list on the backs of our cherished face washes and moisturizers, so it’s a breath of fresh air to know the products we’re putting on our skin are becoming less invasive with fewer harmful ingredients. Just like how we’re supposed to be able to read and understand what all the ingredients are in the foods we eat, the same should be said for our skincare.

This brand was developed by the Pyunkang Oriental Medicine Clinic in Korea – an institution known for treating atopic skin disorders and focusing on the use of traditional Korean ingredients. Their method for proper skin care is to remove all unnecessary chemical substances from their products that may be “trendy” but ultimately serve no purpose. They avoid all fillers, are cruelty-free, and environmentally friendly. They believe in maintaining the balance between oil and moisture in your skin and find the best way to do that is by taking a "back-to-basics" approach. In their foam cleanser, there are only 16 ingredients. To put that in perspective, there are generally 25-30 ingredients in a basic face wash you might pick up at the store.

Feel and consistency: The texture of this product is what makes it so special. It’s runnier than most other foaming face washes, and when you move it around on your fingers, you’ll notice it’s actually a little stringy and stretchy. The company claims this texture is to help the cleanser bond better with dirt and oil. It lathers extremely well and takes almost no product to properly cover your face with a full foam.

Scent: I noticed a slight scent with this cleanser, which is odd, considering the company’s claims to simplicity and no fragrance. It could just be the natural scent of the ingredients. That being said, I’ve had no reaction to this product, and I have pretty sensitive skin.

When/how to use: It can be used in the morning & night and followed by a toner, essence, serum, and moisturizer. The product says to apply a small amount to a dry face and then apply water to create a lather. Personally, I don’t like applying a cleanser to a dry face, so I wet my face first, put a tiny, tiny amount onto my fingertips, rub it between my hands, and then rub it onto my face. Again, you truly one need an amount the size of a pen cap.

Results: I absolutely love the way my skin feels using this cleanser. Foaming face washes always feel enjoyable to me to begin with, and this one has such a fresh, sparkling sensation. It washes off easily and after patting my face dry, my skin does not feel parched or tight. There isn’t that “stripping” sensation like you just wiped everything bad AND good off your face. I love that refreshing effect and appreciate how hydrated my skin feels after. Plus, the packaging is fantastic – it’s simple, uncomplicated, and sincere. In this case, the outer beauty matches its inner beauty. It would be a big plus if they made a smaller bottle size option for their cleanser, as the product is so potent! It’s shelf life is one year, and I’m almost positive I will not get through one bottle in that time. I can’t wait to try out more from their brand!
